It is widely believed that Daishoji was founded sometime during the reign of Emperor Go-Daigo (後醍醐天皇 who reigned from 1318-1339) as a Shingon denomination temple. The main image which is a Fudo Myo-O is said to been carved by Shotoku Taishi (聖徳太子). Mongaku, a monk famous for sitting under the Nachi waterfall and doing penance was given the image and he placed it in the main hall at Daishoji where it has been for over three hundred years.
In later years, the temple was converted to the Rinzai denomination. Today the main image is hidden from the public. The last time it was revealed was 1984. The next time it will be shown is 30 years after this in 2014.
