83 Tofukuji 東福寺(とうふくじ)

Denomination:  Rinzai (臨済宗)

Location:  Nishi Izu-cho (西伊豆町)

IMG_1456Off the shores of Nishina in Nishi Izu, in a place called Sawada ga Hara, early in the Kamakura Period in 1233, Togenji was founded under its original name,Tenfukuji.

IMG_1457In 1307, the temple was moved away from the shoreline to its present day location. In
1375, it was re-established and converted from Shingon to the Rinzai denomination, and renamed Tofukuji.

IMG_1467In 1928/29, the present day family looking after the temple commissioned an Asakusa busshi (a Buddhist image artist) to draw the Gohayku Rakan (the 500 disciples of Buddha who attained nirvana), pictures of flowers and birds, a dragon and a heavenly maiden inside of the temple.
