69 Josekiji 常石寺(じょうせきじ)

IMG_1331Josekiji was founded sometime near the end of the Muromachi period, between 1596 and 1614.It’s main image is Yakushi Nyorai, together with Nikko (sunlight) Bosatsu to the left (your right) and Gakko (moonlight) Bosatsu to the right, forming the Yakushi Sanzon (Triad), as well as the Juni Shinsho, or Twelve Heavenly Generals who protect and serve Yakushi Nyorai.IMG_1332Josekiji is located in an area called Jaishi, 蛇石, roughly translated as the serpent’s head, for the way the road forms the shape of a snake head with the river seemingly coming out of its mouth.
