63 Hoshunji 保春寺(ほしゅんじ)

Denomination:  Soto (曹洞宗)

Main Image:  Kokuzo Jizo (虚空蔵菩薩)

Location:  Minami Izu-cho (南伊豆町)


The year of Hoshunji’s inception is unknown however it originated as part of the
Shingon denomination. Later in its history it was converted to the Soto denomination.


On the temple grounds there is a shrine to Sugawara no Michizane, or Tenman-gu, the
patron saint of scholarship. He was a scholar and politician during the Heian Period and was also regarded as an excellent poet, in particular Chinese poetry.
