Originally built in the middle of the Nara Period as a Shingon temple, changed its name and denomination in 1655 to Chokokuji of the Soto denomination.
The Amida Nyorai main image was apparently found washed up on the shore near the
town. It is made of Hinoki (Japanese cypress) and stands at a height of 86.5 cm, and in 1920 was designated by Japan as an important cultural asset .
