Near the end of the Heian period in1323, while on a mountainous journey to Hoso-in, temple 81 on the pilgrimage, a senior priest from the Shingon temple, Seisho-in, had a profound realization that this particular area was sacred ground.
In 1326 during the Higan week (a week of Buddhist memorial services on the spring
equinox) a building was erected and a Kannon image from Seishu-in was used as
its main image. For an extended period of time after this, the temple went
without a head priest. Sometime between 1804 to 1817 a new building was built
and the temple was converted to the Rinzai denomination.
