Main Gate-dates back to the Edo period (1603–1867).

Although the date it was established, as well as original name of Kaizenji is unknown, it is commonly believed to have been a Shingon denomination temple at the time of its inception.

Later it was moved from Nawaji village to what is now Shimoda proper. It was then
converted to the Jodo denomination and renamed Kaizenji.
