The eleven-faced Kannon Bosatsu that serves as Kannonji’s main image is said to be
made by the famous Japanese sculptor during the Kamakura period, Unkei. Originally a Shingon denomination temple situated up the river from Suzaki Peninsula under another name, in 1615 was renamed Kannonji, now belonging to the Soto denomination.
After a terrible fire in 1747, it was relocated to its current location.
Kannonji has also been included in the Izu 33 Kannon Pilgrimage as temple number 21 on the pilgrimage.
