Ryuho-inwas founded in 1555 as a Shingon denomination temple. It was converted to the Soto denomination in the early part of the next century by the 7th head priest of nearby Saisho-in. In 1879 a fire completely destroyed the temple and all of its records. It was rebuilt at its current location seven years later.
As you come to the end of the steep stone steps leading up to the temple, on your
immediate right is a very old weeping sakura tree. It is said to be more than 400 years old and has been recognized by Higashi Izu as an important natural asset. The flowers bloom from late March to early April.
