At the time of its inception, the temple was part of the Shingon denomination and
commonly referred to as Daiko monastery. In 1540 it was converted to the Soto
denomination by the head monk of nearby Saisho-in, and given the name Daiko-in.

It was here that a very old copy of a pilgrim’s stamp book was discovered dating back
to 1912. After this the Izu pilgrimage experienced a resurgence and year by year the number of pilgrims increased steadily.
