The famous Japanese Buddhist priest, Gyoki, while on a pilgrimage in Izu, came
across a sacred tree which was washed up on the shores of Ajiro in Atami. It was from this tree which the Kannon image was carved.
Chokokuji was originally part of the Shingon denomination and in its main hall houses a
statue of Kobo Daishi. Today it is a Soto denomination temple.
