24 Hannya-in般若院(はんにゃいん)

Denomination:  Koyasan Shingon (高野山真言宗)

Main Image:  Amida Nyorai (阿弥陀如来)

Location:  Izusan, Atami (熱海市伊豆山)


To the left of the main hall, meant to ward off bad fortune and protect against evil
is a life-sized statue depicting Kobo Daishi.

Hannya-in was originally founded in 836, and the main image at that time was a Senju (thousand-armed) Kannon.

IMG_0285Sometime around 1590, before the beginning of the Edo period, the temple was completely burnt down to the ground. It was rebuilt and re-founded as a Koya-san Shingon denomination temple.
