23 Tokoji 東光寺(とうこうじ)

Denomination:  Shingon (真言宗)

Main Image:  Enmei Jizo Bosatsu (延命地蔵菩薩)

Location:  Izusan, Atami (熱海市伊豆山)

IMG_3346The exact dates of this Shingon denomination temple’s inception are unknown however
one belief is that a monk exiled to this area became nostalgic of his own birthplace as he walked and lived in the nearby mountains. He erected a small hermitage to live in and enshrined a Jizo-son.

Another theory as to the origin of this temple is that it was built because behind the
main hall there is a grave of what is referred to as a Sennin, one who has obtained mystical powers through ascetic practices in the mountains. Some believe it is this Sennin who originally founded Tokoji.
